President Lee will be much missed. He pioneered two pivotal elements of global leadership. He led a largely peaceful transition from authoritarianism to democracy and he showed how democracy could flourish in a Chinese society. He understood the patience, compromise and institution-building needed to make it work.
Deeply saddened by the dimming of a great light - the thriving, vibrant and democratic Taiwan that we know today would simply not have been possible without the efforts of the distinguished Dr. Lee Teng-Hui. Our sincerest condolences to his family and to the Taiwanese people.

My deepest condolences on the death of former President Lee. I had met him during my first visit to Taiwan. It was his efforts that makes democracy thrive in that country. May he rest in peace.
Deepest condolences upon the loss of a full and distinguished life.
As a British Parliamentarian I offer my condolences to the people of Taiwan and to the family of Taiwan’s former President Lee Teng-hui.
As Taiwan’s first popularly elected leader it was notable, and instructive to all who disregard terms of office, have scant regard for constitutional norms, and cling on to power, that President Lee stepped down from Office when his term concluded.
As the architect of Taiwan’s modern democracy, President Lee bequeathed a legacy which future generations will treasure. His memory will be honoured for peacefully replacing military dictatorship with a vibrant and prosperous democracy - where freedom, human rights, diversity, protection of minorities, and the rule of law, are its foundation principles.
President Lee’s passing and his lasting Memorial will be these enduring achievements- which stand in stark contrast to those societies based on authoritarianism, coercion, and repression
May he rest in peace.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of such a great Democrat.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great leader and former President of Taiwan, Dr. Lee Teng-Hui.
He was good friend of Lady Thatcher and together that stood firm for freedom against the Communist threat.
I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Lee Teng-Hui in 1998 when I attended the International Democrat Union conference in Taipei, as the Chairman of the International Young Democrat Union at that time.
Dr. Lee was a wonderful leader of Taiwan and will be sadly missed, but his proud legacy will live on.
